Back to Back Virginia State Amateur Champion Brinson Paolini
Congratulations goes out to the winners of Virginia and Maryland’s respective Men’s State Amateurs and State Opens. They are the VSGA and MSGA’s biggest championships and here are the 2009 winners.
Virginia State Amateur:
Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach entered the 2009 event as the defending champion. While he arrived back from a junior tournament in Japan earlier in the week, the Cox High School graduate didn’t have any plans on relinquishing his crown. He made a furious comeback in the final nine holes vs. Blacksburg’s Lanto Griffin. Down by 5 holes, he caught him and put him away, 2 up. SunTrust State Open of Virginia:
PGA Professional Faber Jamerson of Appamattox shot a final round 2-under par 70 at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian to win by five strokes. The win was the 3rd such in this championship for Jamerson, who was competing in his first event of the year after December 2008 knee surgery. Jamerson’s five stroke victory was the largest in the championship since he himself won by 6 strokes in 2006. Finishing five strokes back was Chip Sullivan of Roanoke Country Club. The runner up finish was Sullivan’s 4th in the last 5 years in the event.
Maryland State Amateur
Jay Mulieri from TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms won the 88th Maryland State Amateur Championship by defeating Zach Lese of Argyle CC, 2-up in the championship match. At 19, he became one of the youngest winners in tournament history. The Loyola College sophomore follows his older brother Michael as a Maryland State Amateur Champion.
Maryland Open Championship
In the end, it took a 25 ft. birdie putt on the final hole for Matt Bassler of Rolling Road GC to insure a 2-stroke victory at the 88th Maryland Open. Bassler, 23, who works with the First Tee Program of Baltimore, started birdie-birdie, gaining a tie for the lead in the process. He held on for an even par final round on a tough Hillendale CC track and won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 70-69-71 = 210.
