Carolyn Bivens took over the LPGA in 2005
Following a player-only meeting featuring some of the biggest names on the LPGA Tour, Commissioner Carolyn Bivens has been asked to step down as the tour’s head honcho. Those at the meeting last week in Toledo, Ohio, included Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis, among the most prominent players in women’s golf.
The tour is leaking title sponsors and subsequently tournaments, this after the news of the tournament on Maui at Kapalua that has asked for a one-year freeze on tournament activities to find a title sponsor. The LPGA has said they they will still hold Kapalua to their contract, making for an interesting tug of war.
The tour has already said farewell to popular events in Rochester, NY and Toledo, OH, and is reportedly in danger of losing another great event, the Michelob ULTRA Championship at Kingsmill.
According to Golfweek, players were told at a recent meeting that there are only 10 confirmed contracts signed with title sponsors for 2010. Players apparently saw the red flag when even some of the most loyal and well supported events on the schedule were withdrawing. LPGA Tour spokesman David Higdon said Bivens would not be available to comment.
