The Greenbrier in White Sulpher Springs, WV
The grand old dame has seen better days, financially at least. Crippled by an economic downturn and continued loss of revenue, owner CSX Corporation has decided it can no longer fund The Greenbrier Resort and has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy on the property. According to a recent Washington Post article which contains all of the pertinent financial details, Bethesda based Marriott International may be stepping in to rescue the historic grounds.
The resort has hosted royal families and dozens of U.S. Presidents. Heck the place even resembles the White House. It was the site of a secret Cold War ear bunker for the president and heads of government in case of nuclear attack. It was also the legendary stomping grounds of Sam Snead himself, and played host to the 1979 Ryder Cup.
Having been there, I’ll say it’s quite a treat. It’s meticulously old-fashioned, with modern touches in just the right places. You can’t beat the views of the West Virginia country side, and even though I only played one of the three courses there, the golf is all it’s hyped up to be.
But with people not spending as lavishly on resort travel Marriott or whomever the buyer ends up being will now have to look for new ways to showcase the beautiful West Virginia landmark. I for one hope they bring the old gal back to past glory.
And a company spokesman confirms, the name will not be changed. It will continue to be called The Greenbrier.
